Building the Drive Academy family

By Joshua Pycroft ·

Most of what I build starts from one question: what would make an everyday job easier? Under Drive Academy Ltd, that's grown into a few families of brands. The Drive Academy family is all about learning to drive. The Atlas brands, Cuisine Atlas and the soon-to-launch Travel Atlas, are about food and travel. And HomeIndex, a home asset register app for keeping track of everything you'd need for your insurance, is on the way.

This post is about the Drive Academy family, and how its brands fit together.

Finding an instructor

Drive Academy is a free directory of driving instructors across the UK. A learner types in their postcode, sees the instructors who cover their area, and messages them directly. There's no booking system in the middle and no fee for the learner.

A webpage for every instructor

Lots of good instructors don't have a website, or have one that's hard to keep up to date. So every instructor listed on Drive Academy can also have a free webpage on My Driving School, with their prices, the areas they cover and a contact form. It's free, and it stays free.

Practising the real test routes

Once lessons are under way, the next worry is the test itself. Driving Test Routes sells Route Packs of real test routes for test centres around the UK, from local instructors. They open in our free app, GPX Test Route Pro, which talks you round each route. And Driving Test Routes | UK goes a step further, with test centres preloaded in the app so you can subscribe to your centre and start practising straight away.

Where it all gets tested

I still teach. Learn with Joshua is my own driving school in Waterlooville, and it keeps me honest: if something doesn't help my own pupils, it doesn't make it into the brands.

I'm also working on a bigger project in assisted speech. It's early days, and I'll share more when the time is right.
